Description

Nighthaks At The Diner is a 1975 album by Tom Waits, released on Asylum Records. The title was inspired by Edward Hopper''s 1942 painting Nighthawks. The album''s working title had been "Nighthawk Postcards from Easy Street," but it was shortened to Nighthawks at the Diner. The album was recorded live in Record Plant Studios, in front of a small invited audience. This gives the record an intimate feeling as Waits spends time telling stories, jokes and explaining the stories behind his songs through seven separate introductions.

When this first came out, the track that received the most airplay was Phantom 309, the country classic from Red Sovine. My favorite radio station back east played it for a sold 4 months. Then we moved, and moved back, and I hadn''t heard Tom Waits version on the radio since. This is a great record! Everything clicks! Tom and the band are in fine form as he tears through the set list, giving it that aura that only he can give. If you are new to Mr. Waits, this is one of those cornerstone records you''ll want to have in your collection, as it deserves repeated visits to recapture a time in history, not so long ago!

This CD was a gift for a friend. That said, I already owned a copy, and gave it to him to fill a hole in his Waits collection.

The performance is in front of a live audience. My understanding is that Waits set up a very small venue to do the performance. In essence this gives the effect of performing in a small club.

The music is very nice, as is the banter between songs. Sometimes it''s difficult to tell what''s banter and what''s song. That''s not a criticism. I found it charming.

I''ll acknowledge that Tom Waits isn''t for everyone. I have a very difficult time getting my wife to listen to him. She has difficulty getting past the gravelly voice. I compare him to someone like Dylan. He''s a singer-songwriter of widely diverse range and style.

If you like Tom Waits, this is a great choice for your collection. If you aren''t familiar with Waits, this is also a good choice. His remarkable sense of humor is on full display, as is his style that aligns him closely with people on the streets and hidden in the alleys.

Yes. I bought this when the vinyl LP first came out but then never replaced it with the CD when I gave up playing platters (can you still even guy quality styluses at a reasonable price?). It was good to hear this album again. Tom Waits has been a favorite of mine for a long time now. When it''s been raining cats and dogs on a miserable California night, this album hits the spot like a shot of sludge coffee and chili with onions.

This album is my Sunday morning standard . Great live in studio performance from Tom & the band is outrageous . A flop when it came out , this album stands the test of time. Jazz greats backing with little practice make this an electric performance

I was instantly a devoted fan the first time I heard/saw Tom Waits in 1975 on a Canadian middle of the night music program. He was just a pup in age but a sage well beyond his years with a bourban voice and a style all his own. I am particularly fond of his early work including Rain Dogs and Blue Valentine but ahhhhh... Nighthawks. Absolutely brilliant. Nobody, Better Off Without a Wife and Putnam County shine. I literally wore out two albums and my CD version is ready for a replacement.

If you''ve ever been lonely, had a broken heart or are simply an aficionado of perfect lyrics, buy this music NOW! You will not be disappointed as it is a masterpiece.

Am a new fan of Waits, introduced to him by the bassist on his recordings. While Waits'' vocabulary causes my N.C. friends to blanch, I, after living 52 years in MA, laugh out loud with joy at the verbal dexterity of this man in his lyrics. Could anything be more apt in today''s world than his line, written in the mid 1970s, for the song STEP RIGHT UP, "the large print giveth and the small print taketh away"?

A bold recording, replete with sparkling street-wise wit in its numerous ''Introductions'', I have to say that I didn''t quite get in 1983, the year of ''Swordfishtrombones''. I got ''Closing Time'' straight away, and ''Small Change'', but this seemed a much looser affair, and wouldn''t have been my automatic choice for a spin on the turn-table. But now, I think it is as good as anything he has ever recorded, and I agree with others that you have to have the time to take it all in in one sitting, as if you were invited along to that little guest audience Tom invited into the studio. It would be great were he to do something similar again, as a substitute for a sudden dearth of touring, in the new styles he has evolved. Truly: did this artist ever seriously put a foot wrong?

Early Tom Waits recording with a jazz trio ...tenor sax, bass and drums. The backing musicians are superb throughout as is Mr Waits (mostly on piano) It''s a live recording in a studio with an invited audience I believe, the sound quality is great as is the atmosphere in the room. Close your eyes and you could be in a sleazy night club in New York or Chicago being entertained by the superbly original Tom Waits! If you like his earlier work before Swordfish Trombones you will dig this. Highly recommended!
